Yangon govt seeks CNG price reduction

The Yangon Region government has asked the Union government to reduce CNG prices by 50 percent, as Yangon Bus Service (YBS) revenues fall on declining passenger numbers.

“The Yangon Region government are passing on a request first made by the Yangon Region Transport Authority (YRTA) to reduce the price of CNG. It is very hard for YBS bus lines to continue operating. If the officials allow it, the price reduction will give us great relief,” said U Hla Aung, joint secretary of the YRTA on September 22.

The cost to refuel each YBS bus is K30,000 per day, which is around K6million if a company operates 200 buses.
“The numbers of YBS passengers has drastically decline this past week. Although we have 150 buses, we can operate only 70 buses. YBS buses are incurring income losses of around 70 percent,” said U Ko Ko Naing, chief operating officer of Ludu Mate Swe (People’s Friend) bus company.

The number of YBS passengers was about 1.8million before the outbreak of COVID-19, and fell to between 200,000 and 300,000 on September 20 and 21.
