Falam (Surbung) Airport, the only aviation access to Chin State, will not open this month due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

As the airport construction has finished, Myanmar National Airlines will have the test flying of its ART plane this month.

This is the first airport Chin State has built on a hill over 6,000 feet sea level. The state has to mainly rely on land to engage in its health, social and administrative affairs.

“The construction of Surbung Airport has been completed. But due to the Covid-19 crisis, we will not open it. Myanmar National Airlines will have test flying first,” said Deputy Minister for Transport and Communications Kyaw Myo.

Navigation facilities used for airports built in hilly regions have also been installed.

The whole project that started in 2015-2016 fiscal year is set to finish in 2020-2021 fiscal year and ATR-72 planes will be used.

When the airport opens, there will be flights among Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw and Kalay.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications demanded Ks141.112 billion in the 2019-2020 fiscal year for the projects to be implemented with foreign aid and loans.

Chin State has built its first airport to solve its transport problems.
