Severely ill COVID-19 patients cost Myanmar govt up to K5M each

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi said during a live address on December 5 the government had to spend K2.5 million-K5 million on medical treatment for each seriously ill COVID-19 patient.

“For mild cases, the government has to spend K1.5 million to K2 million each. This is the overall expense for each patient covered by the government, directly and indirectly,” she said. She added that the government also spends about K600,000 on each person in quarantine. “The government has to spend taxpayer money to treat COVID-19 patients. This is the people’s money. Although it is spent for the people’s sake, it is not being spent the way it should,” she said.
She warned people in Yangon during the address that virus cases as well as deaths are likely to increase due to the mass gatherings that took place during the Tazaungdaing holidays.

She urged people to adhere to COVID-19 prevention measures, as it will take time for a vaccine to arrive. Myanmar, which has about 1600 COVID-19 cases and more than 30 deaths a day, overtook China last week in total COVID-19 cases. The government has extended COVID-19 measures for another two weeks, till December 15. – Translated
