Mandalay COVID-19 centres produce 10 tonnes of waste daily

The Mandalay City Development Committee (MCDC) collects about 10 tonnes of waste a day from COVID-19 treatment and quarantine centres with special garbage trucks, said U Zeyar Neyin, head of the city’s cleansing department.
“We have to control our staff to protect them from infection. Three workers wear protective gear to collect the garbage at the COVID-19 centres from 7am to 8pm.

We collect the waste when the centres contact us. Now there are many centres, and they produce 10 tonnes of waste a day,” he said. Mandalay district produces more than 900 tonnes of waste daily, and the waste from the centres is sent to the incinerator at Taung Inn-Myauk Inn. The machine runs 24 hours a day, but it is sometimes out of order, so the waste is then sent to Kyar Ni Kan and buried 15 feet deep.

“We operate four special garbage trucks to collect waste daily at COVID-19 centres. We assign one driver and two cleaners for each truck. We cannot substitute the duty man with another,” he said.

The mayor gives K2500 (US1.85) tips per day to the workers who collect waste from COVID-19 centres. They are also disinfected and have to burn their protective gear to protect their family members. – Translated
