First Myanmar private lab gets ISO/IEC 12025 accreditation

The Food Industry Development Supporting Laboratory (FIDSL) has become the first private laboratory in the country to secure the ISO/IEC 12025 certificate. Myanmar Agro Based Food Processors & Exporters Association (MFPEA) Chair U Aye Win said the certification can help expand Myanmar’s food sector by allowing domestic food products to be tested for international recognition.

“Our lab is the second one after the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) to obtain this certification and the first among private labs,” he said. U Aye Win said the food industry is a promising sector for Myanmar and that there is a need for the country to have more laboratories for standardization purposes.

The FIDSL project was started in 2012 under Japan’s GGA program. It received approximately US$100,000 assistance for the procurement of equipment. The laboratory was awarded the ISO/IEC 17025: 2017 – its first international recognized certificate – in May 2020, following inspection and verification by Myanmar’s National Accreditation Body (NAB) and international accreditation organization Singapore Accreditation Council (SAC).
“The FDA welcomes the emergence of another internationally recognized laboratory. We acknowledge it,” said U Khin Chit, FDA’s deputy director-general. There are currently 20 laboratories, including the government’s FDA, tending to Myanmar’s food industry. – Translated
