Myanmar ready for COVID-19 vaccinations

The COVID-19 vaccinations can be administered as soon as they arrive in Myanmar, said U Myat Wunna Soe, deputy director general from the Public Health Department, Ministry of Health and Sports on January 7.

The senior government official said that preparations are complete for Myanmar to start the vaccination process once they have access to the vaccines.

“No extra special training is needed to handle this. Whenever a new vaccine comes into existence, our staff are already trained with the necessary technical skills,” he said.

“Whether it is subcutaneous or intralipid infusions or intramuscular injections, they are trained for it and have been doing it skillfully. Once the vaccines arrive, I believe we will be able to facilitate the vaccination programme as planned,” he said.

The government has been communicating and working with neighboring countries to acquire the COVID-19 vaccines. They have said that vaccination is expected to start in February.

“There are freezers in respective rural health centres to store the vaccines. There are cold storage facilities at the regional level. Our nurses have specialised data on the (demographics) to be vaccinated in their respective areas. I think we can prepare to start vaccination in accordance with the priority list once the instruction comes,” said U Myat Wunna Soe.
The government will prioritise healthcare staff for vaccination.

“It is not concrete yet but everyone has heard about the priorities for vaccination. For the flu vaccine, our healthcare staff receives it first and then people over 60, followed by children. Then it would be the villages that have many cases (of the disease) and pregnant women. We will be able to immediately implement it once there is an exact guideline,” he said.

According to MOHS, there are 128,178 COVID-19 cases in Myanmar. This has resulted in 2,785 deaths while 111,401 patients have recovered and have been discharged from the respective treatment centres.
