Myanmar, China to conduct feasibility study on Mandalay-Kyaukphyu railway

Myanmar and China on January 11 signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct a feasibility study of a railway linking Kyaukphyu in Rakhine State with Mandalay and Muse. The China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co Ltd had presented the feasibility study report for the Muse-Mandalay section of the railway during Chinese President Mr. Xi Jinping’s first visit to Myanmar in January 2020. The two countries had also discussed matters related to technical and financial issues.

The railway is an important project in China’s Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor. Bilateral relations between the two countries are also expected to become stronger through cooperation, said U Thant Sin Maung, Minister for Transport and Communication.

The Chinese government’s aim is to implement a railway and roads linking Kunming of Yunnan in China to Muse, Mandalay, and Kyaukphyu in Myanmar. The Chinese are slated to construct a special economic zone and deepsea port in Kyaukphyu. The Muse-Mandalay section of the railway project will involve an investment of US$8.9billion, according to state-owned Myanma Railways. The railway section located in China will be complete in 2023 and trains will run between China and Myanmar, said Mr. Chen Hai, Chinese ambassador to Myanmar. The move to connect China and Myanmar via road and rail is also expected to help the Myanmar economy grow, he said. – Translated
