Thailand to take care of only 3 million migrant workers

Thailand would be able to take care of three million migrant workers in the Kingdom, mostly coming from three countries, including Myanmar, a government spokesperson said. Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesperson of the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said only those migrant workers that entered the country up to December 29, 2020, can register and avail of help.

He is calling on other migrant workers who are still planning to enter the country to hold their plans and also urge a stop to human trafficking. “I beg you to stop taking more people in,” he said in a briefing on January 15. “Only those in Thailand since December 29 will be taken care of. Please stop entering the country.” “I would like to urge those engaged in human trafficking and transporting people illegally into the Kingdom to stop doing so,” he said. The report said that some foreigners are paying human smugglers up to 10,000 (US$ 333 dollars) per person to get into the Kingdom. Taweesin estimated that Thailand has over 2.5 million documented workers from Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos, and around 500,000 illegal workers who might or might not have an employer.

“The documented workers have employers and the employers will take care of their employees’ health. For the undocumented workers, we have made some liberalization for them to allow registration online from January 15 to February 13,” he said. Thailand is facing a resurgence of COVID-19 cases and the number of infections has reached over 12,000 with 71 deaths. The Kingdom reported 59 new cases on January 19. Officials blamed the uptick in new cases on the unabated increase in the number of illegal migrant workers, especially from Myanmar, where COVID-19 cases remained uncontrolled. Thailand is the favorite destination of Myanmar migrant workers who are seeking better economic opportunities amid sluggish economic growth. – Translated
